Eric Bieniemy Rift With Chiefs Rumors: Initial Reactions

Do you think this is Bieniemy's last year with the Chiefs' organization?

Update: the original article has since been deleted on Medium by the author

Rumors have been making the rounds about a rift between Eric Bieniemy and others in the Kansas City Chiefs organization. Those rumors took a large jump Wednesday night.

An editorial was written by “The Chiefs Kingdom Editorial Board” released late Wednesday night. If you haven’t read the article, you should take a couple of minutes to read it. I want to start by saying this is not an article from anyone in the mainstream media. It is from an unnamed group known best for their Facebook & Twitter pages protesting in 2012 for changes in the organization.

We do not know if the accusations made in the article are true or not. It could all be true, it could all be false, or it could be any combination in between. But we all know where there is smoke, there is a fire. Rumors have been flowing on social media since the AFC title game. Handicapper Brandon Lang went on video claiming there was a rift at halftime of the game over the half’s final play. So clearly, this isn’t something the CKEB came up with out of thin air.

So let’s take a minute and look at this as everything in the article is true. That Bieniemy was trying to throw around his power and butted heads with Patrick Mahomes. He is alleged to have changed the game plan that Mahomes and Andy Reid had set before the AFC title game. There were many more accusations that painted Bieniemy in an unflattering light.

If these things are true, then he has to go. That is a big if, of course, but if it’s true, the fact he is having a meeting with Reid about the offensive coordinator job is baffling. You have a top-five (at worst) head coach of all time. A $500 billion best quarterback in the league at 26 years old. Anyone who fights or tries to pretend they are smarter than those two can not be in the organization.

I am all for challenging those guys. I want an OC who will challenge and question them; and, I have no issue with that at all. But that OC also needs to know their role and understand they will never be the smartest person in that room. Especially not when you are a coach who can’t get a head coach job after 15 interviews.

These accusations would make this season make a lot more sense. You had an OC with a separate agenda based solely around his personal aspirations. Bieniemy wanted to do one thing with Reid, and Mahomes wanted another thing. Plays being called that hadn’t been run in months, and players being played who everyone knew didn’t deserve it. Amazingly, they made it as far as they did if these accusations were true.

I find it hard to believe things were business as usual all season. Too many things were different all year. There were too many things that did not make sense all season long. The AFC title game got so out of character that people still claim the fix was in. That, of course, is complete insanity.

Since the beginning of the season, I have said that this had to be Bieniemy’s last year in KC. I have never had anything against Bieniemy, I think he’s a good man, and he’s been a good coach. But he is not head coaching material. You don’t interview that many times and still get a job, ask David Toub. The Chiefs’ offense has been getting worse over the last two years. Still very good, but it was clear something was different.

It’s time to move on whether these accusations are true or not. The Chiefs needed changes, and he’s one of them. Reid needs to take back full control of the offense and not have anyone trying to talk over him. Question him, yes, but Reid is the offense genius and the man in charge. He, along with Mahomes, needs to have the final say. Clearly, there was an issue with that duo when Bieniemy tried to be the third wheel. There is no place for a third wheel when you have the perfect marriage of Reid and Mahomes.
